When I first saw this video about 5 years ago it had a huge impact on me and I still can’t get it out of my head.

This video says so much with relatively few words. I realize it’s a commercial but it has never prompted me to purchase any Dove products. I also realize all the hypocracy in the ad which Bob Garfield writes about in this article. In spite of this, I wish more commercials called on us to think about the bigger picture.

According to The National Eating Disorder Association:

  • In the US 10% if young women have an eating disorder
  • 43% of 1st – 3rd grade girls want to be thinner
  • Anorexia is the third most common chronic illness among adolescents
  • The majority of eating disorders occur during puberty and the late teens/early adult life, but symptoms can occur as young as kindergarten.
